Texas Military Institute — Llano

Historic School TX • Llano County County
Description
Military and academic boarding school for boys opened September 14, 1897, in the Algona Hotel building on an eighteen-acre campus in iron-boom Llano.
Historical Notes
The Texas Military Institute, Llano, succeeded the Austin campus that closed in 1879. Rev. Charles P. Dorset was the first president; seven instructors taught a four-year course with gymnasium and armory. The school occupied a three-story brick and red granite Algona Hotel structure until a 1900 tornado damaged the building. The hotel later burned in 1923; the institute closed in the first half of the twentieth century.
