Ten Thousand Islands Smuggler Cache

Lost Treasure FL • Collier County County
Description
Collier County legend of pirate and rum-runner gold hidden in the Ten Thousand Islands mangrove maze — where Marco Island and Everglades waterways sheltered smugglers for three centuries.
Historical Notes
The Ten Thousand Islands archipelago between Marco Island and Everglades City offered limitless hideouts for pirates, Calusa traders, and Prohibition rum runners. Southwest Florida guides and Naples-area folklore describe chests buried on unnamed keys accessible only at high tide. The 1920s Ashley Gang and earlier Gulf pirates overlap in oral tradition here. Everglades National Park and Collier County waters remain among Florida's most treasure-rich legendary landscapes despite federal protections.
