Description
Legend of four to six wooden kegs of new dimes from the Denver mint lost when wagons bound for Phoenix disappeared between Crawford and Montrose — wagon remains and scattered dimes found near Black Canyon.
Historical Notes
A wagon train carrying four to six kegs of newly minted dimes from Denver to Phoenix vanished between a Crawford ranch and Montrose. Four wagons were later found at a canyon rim where a side wash fell into the ravine. Treasure hunters gathered gallons of dimes along the Gunnison River near the north rim of Black Canyon; more is said to await discovery. Coordinates mark the Black Canyon / Gunnison River search area.
