Tallassee Civil War Gold — Horseshoe Bend

Lost Treasure AL • Tallapoosa County County
Description
Tallassee ironworks legend of $200,000 to $285,000 in Confederate gold hidden near a creek bend at Ironaton during the closing months of the Civil War.
Historical Notes
The Tallassee Confederate Arsenal and ironworks produced munitions for the Southern war effort. As Union forces closed in, folklore holds that payroll gold was hidden near Ironaton and a horseshoe bend of the Tallapoosa River. TreasureNet and Digital Alabama cite figures between $200,000 and $285,000 buried in 1864. Mill workers and officials were said to know the general area but not exact markers. Tallassee's industrial ruins and wooded creek bends continue to attract metal-detector hobbyists and legend seekers in Tallapoosa County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
