Sutton County Devils River Draw Outlaw Cache — Sutton County

Lost Treasure TX • Sutton County County
Description
Sutton County legend of outlaw loot buried in the limestone breaks along Devils River Draw south of Sonora on the old military road toward Del Rio.
Historical Notes
Sonora sits on Devils River Draw and Lowrey Draw, where the city later built a series of flood-control dams in the late 1950s. The draw drains toward the Devils River country that John Coffee Hays renamed in 1848 during his San Antonio–El Paso reconnaissance. West Texas outlaw caches commonly cluster in canyon draws where stage and freight traffic slowed between water holes. Sutton County's Devil's River News, founded in 1890, long chronicled frontier tales of the region. Coordinates approximate Devils River Draw south of Sonora in Sutton County.
