Sunset Crossing Coffin Gold

Lost Treasure AZ • Navajo / Apache County
Description
1855 legend: prospector Darlington buried half his $300,000 California gold haul ($150,000) in his wife's coffin at Sunset Crossing of the Little Colorado River when she died en route home to Illinois.
Historical Notes
Returning from successful California mining with $300,000 in gold, Darlington's wife fell ill and died at Sunset Crossing on the Little Colorado River. The trading-post owner built a heavy coffin — six men were needed to lower it. Years later it was learned Darlington had placed $150,000 in gold in the coffin as his wife's share. The gold has never been recovered according to legend.
