Sugarloaf Mountain Santa Anna Gold — Gause

Lost Treasure TX • Burleson County County
Description
Burleson County legend that General Santa Anna buried gold atop Sugarloaf Mountain near Gause as his army passed through — a landmark west of Hearne searched for generations with picks and even dynamite.
Historical Notes
Sugarloaf Mountain is a prominent limestone knob near Gause and Branchville west of Hearne, overlooking the Little Brazos River bottom. Local tradition holds that Santa Anna's forces buried pay chests on the summit during the Texas Revolution era retreat. TexAgs outdoors forums document farmers near Branchville fielding trespass inquiries for decades; one searcher reportedly used dynamite on the hill without result. The Tonkawa Tribe has recently reacquired Sugarloaf Mountain, tightening access. Historians treat the story as unverified folklore common across Texas ("Santa Anna gold on every acre"). Coordinates mark Sugarloaf Mountain near Gause in western Burleson County.
