Stringtown Freedmen's Church — Oatmeal

Historic Church TX • Burnet County County
Description
Post–Civil War freedmen's settlement church east of Oatmeal; building served as both church and school for Burnet County's only all-Black cemetery district.
Historical Notes
After the Civil War a colony of former slaves settled in the eastern part of Oatmeal along a straight lane. They built a structure used as both church and school and established the only all-Black cemetery in Burnet County. Known as Stringtown among other names, the community ceased to exist by the 1920s, but the church-school tradition documents Reconstruction-era Black settlement in the Hill Country.
