Sterling City Goodnight Trail Cache — Coke County

Lost Treasure TX • Coke County County
Description
Sterling City north of San Angelo on the Charles Goodnight trail — folklore of buried cattle-drive profits and rustler loot in the Colorado River breaks.
Historical Notes
Sterling City is the county seat of Coke County on the upper Colorado River drainage north of San Angelo. Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving drove cattle through this country in the 1860s, establishing the Goodnight-Loving Trail. Trail-era treasure tales describe drovers hiding gold and silver when threatened by Comanches or rustlers. Coke County's limestone breaks and Colorado River crossings appear in West Texas cache compilations. Coordinates approximate Sterling City. Much of Coke County is ranch land with limited public access.
