Stephenville Texas Central Railroad Payroll — Erath County

Lost Treasure TX • Erath County County
Description
Stephenville legend of a Texas Central Railway payroll strongbox from the era when Erath County's seat became the dairy and college hub of the Hico–Stephenville corridor.
Historical Notes
Stephenville developed as the Erath County seat and a Texas Central Railroad town, later home to Tarleton State University and a major dairy industry. Weekly railroad and cattle-sale payrolls concentrated cash at division points across North Central Texas. Rail-payroll folklore mirrors Hico, Dublin, and Comanche entries on parallel lines west of Waco. Erath County sits between the Bosque and Leon drainages on the Grand Prairie edge. Coordinates mark downtown Stephenville in Erath County northwest of Hico.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
