Stede Bonnet Lake Moultrie Treasure

Lost Treasure SC • Berkeley County County
Description
Berkeley County folklore of Stede Bonnet burying plunder at Wantoot Plantation before his 1718 Charleston execution — treasure now submerged beneath Lake Moultrie after the 1941 Santee Cooper flooding.
Historical Notes
Pirate historian Adam "Captain Marrow" Morrow documents legend that Bonnet traveled up the Cooper River to Childsbury Town, then overland to Wantoot Plantation where his crew buried chests or tossed gold into a pond circa 1718. Generations of treasure hunters dug the rice plantation until Santee Cooper created Lake Moultrie in 1941, flooding Wantoot. The Post and Courier gave searchers one final week before inundation. Bonnet was hanged at White Point Gardens in December 1718, but Berkeley County folklore holds his ghost guarded the hoard — now lost under Bonneau Beach waters.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
