Star Valley Auburn Outlaw Cabin Loot

Lost Treasure WY • Lincoln County County
Description
Star Valley legend of Butch Cassidy, Matt Warner, and Tom McCarty hiding in an Auburn cabin after the 1889 Telluride bank robbery — local lore of dollar bills plastered on cabin walls and unstated outlaw caches.
Historical Notes
Family histories from Grover and Auburn describe McCarty and Warner building a cabin in 1887–1888 and returning after the June 1889 Telluride holdup. Cassidy bought horses from Star Valley ranchers before the August 1896 Montpelier, Idaho, bank robbery with Elzy Lay and Bub Meeks. Treasure writers treat snowbound Star Valley as a secondary Wild Bunch winter hideout rivaling Hole-in-the-Wall, with loot possibly cached near Auburn and Afton.
