Description
Mother church of the Catholic Diocese of Austin; Gothic Revival cathedral completed 1884 on the site of an 1852 parish church.
Historical Notes
Nicholas J. Clayton designed the limestone cathedral; Bishop John M. Odin laid the cornerstone in 1874. St. Mary's served Irish, German, and Mexican Catholic communities in nineteenth-century Austin. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark; anchors the Catholic campus at 15th and Brazos Streets near the Capitol.
