Sullivan County legend tied to Rogers' Rangers retreat from the 1759 St. Francis raid — gold and silver plunder reportedly carried to Fort Number Four at Charlestown before being lost along the Connecticut River corridor.
Historical Notes
Fort Number Four at Charlestown guarded the Connecticut River frontier in Sullivan County during the French and Indian War. A November 1759 letter from Fort Number Four describes rangers bringing away plunder from St. Francis, including a ten-pound silver image. Folklore links the fort site to dropped guineas and abandoned raid loot along the upper Connecticut River in Sullivan County.
