St. Augustine Buccaneer Smuggler Cache

Lost Treasure FL • St. Johns County County
Description
Nation's oldest port legend of pirate and Spanish smuggler gold hidden in St. Augustine's coquina fortifications, bayous, and the Matanzas Inlet dunes.
Historical Notes
St. Augustine, founded 1565, endured pirate raids from Sir Francis Drake to the buccaneer era. Castillo de San Marcos and the harbor inlet offered hiding places for contraband gold and silver. Colonial smugglers and privateers used the Matanzas River and Anastasia Island to move loot away from Spanish tax collectors. Oral tradition describes chests buried north and south of the city gates. Florida's Atlantic coast pirate lore converges here with treasure-fleet salvage stories from the 1715 wrecks to the north.
