SS Islander Sunken Gold — Lynn Canal

Lost Treasure AK • Juneau Borough County
Description
Lynn Canal shipwreck legend — the steamer Islander struck an iceberg and sank in 1901 with Klondike-era passengers and a strong rumor of gold aboard; salvage recovered bullion decades later but fueled enduring tales of unfound cargo.
Historical Notes
The Islander went down August 14, 1901, north of Juneau in Lynn Canal with dozens lost. Contemporary accounts and later treasure writers claimed wealthy Klondike passengers carried substantial gold that never reached shore. Modern salvage operations recovered gold bars and coins from the wreck, confirming at least some precious metal aboard, yet popular lore still treats the site as partially looted or holding scattered strongbox wealth along the channel floor. Juneau Empire and coin-collector press document both the historical sinking and the recovered treasure, making this one of Alaska's best-documented shipwreck gold stories.
