SS Clara Nevada Shipwreck Gold — Eldred Rock

Lost Treasure AK • Haines Borough County
Description
1898 Lynn Canal disaster lore — the Clara Nevada exploded and sank near Eldred Rock with Klondike gold-rush passengers and persistent rumors of a fortune in strongboxes never fully accounted for after the blast.
Historical Notes
The Clara Nevada left Skagway in February 1898 laden with stampeders and freight, then blew apart near Eldred Rock lighthouse waters. Survivors and later researchers suspected foul play, smuggled gold, and sealed strongboxes. NUMA and regional historians have treated the wreck as a cold-case treasure story tied to the height of the Klondike rush through the Inside Passage. NOAA Lynn Canal maritime surveys document the hazardous channel where the steamer vanished, anchoring the legend in a real navigation disaster rather than pure fiction.
