SS Aleutian Kodiak Shipwreck Gold

Lost Treasure AK • Kodiak Island Borough County
Description
Kodiak Island shipwreck legend — the steamer Aleutian sank in a storm with one to three million dollars in Nome and Fairbanks gold aboard; pilots later reported masts visible at low tide before the site was lost again.
Historical Notes
Turn-of-the-century accounts describe the Aleutian blown off course, striking a submerged boulder, and sinking within minutes with a large gold shipment from Interior and Seward Peninsula fields. Years later an aviator sighted masts near Kodiak at extreme low tide beside the strike rock, organized divers, then died in a crash before a recovery expedition could return. Related Kodiak waters lore includes smaller wrecks such as the Servia and St. George with additional gold cargoes, amplifying the Aleutian as the flagship lost-ship treasure of the archipelago.
