Spaniards' Forgotten Hoard — Graham County

Lost Treasure KS • Graham County County
Description
Solomon River legend of Spaniards burying $400,000 in gold bars near Morland — or throwing a treasure chest into the river during an Indian attack before the channel shifted and stranded the hoard on dry ground.
Historical Notes
Near Morland in Graham County, folklore tells of a Spanish or Mexican party carrying bullion along the Solomon River when warriors attacked. One version says $400,000 in gold bars was hurriedly buried on the prairie; another says a chest was thrown into the river and left high and dry when the Solomon changed course. Northwest Kansas river-treasure tales often cite shifting Solomon River channels as the reason caches remain lost beneath farmland. The Rocker Box Graham County list records both the chest and the $400,000 bar variants near Morland. No documented Spanish mining colony existed in Graham County, placing the story in frontier legend rather than verified history. Coordinates approximate Morland on the Solomon River.
