South Pass City Hidden Pay Dirt

Lost Treasure WY • Fremont County County
Description
South Pass legend of unrecovered placer pockets and miner caches from the 1867–1870 gold rush — the boom that produced an estimated $2 million before many diggings were abandoned as ore grew expensive to work.
Historical Notes
Gold was discovered at Strawberry Creek in 1866 and South Pass City incorporated in 1868 amid Carissa Mine excitement. BLM South Pass Historic Mining Area preserves hundreds of mining claims where treasure lore imagines strongboxes and paystreaks left when camps busted. Coordinates mark South Pass City State Historic Site in the Wind River Range foothills.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
