Sonora Wool Mohair Baron Fortune — Sutton County

Lost Treasure TX • Sutton County County
Description
Sonora legend of a considerable wool-and-mohair fortune buried near the Sutton County seat — the Hill Country wool capital on the San Antonio–Del Rio corridor.
Historical Notes
Sutton County became one of America's leading wool and mohair regions after the Santa Fe Railway reached Sonora in 1930. The Sonora Wool and Mohair Company marketed millions of pounds of fleece annually; regional folklore sometimes places baron-scale hoards near the county seat. Charlie Adams founded Sonora in 1887 and drilled the town well in 1889. Ranch specie and trade profits along the frontier road to Del Rio fed decades of cache tales in the Devil's River country. Coordinates mark downtown Sonora in Sutton County on Interstate 10 between San Angelo and Del Rio.
