Sonora Santa Fe Railroad Payroll — Sutton County

Lost Treasure TX • Sutton County County
Description
Sonora legend of an unrecovered Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad payroll from the era when the Orient line finally linked the Sutton County seat to San Angelo in 1930.
Historical Notes
Sonora waited more than twenty years for rail service after the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway began laying track in 1909. When the Santa Fe completed the San Angelo–Sonora segment in May 1930, weekly ranch and railroad payrolls concentrated in cash at the Sutton County depot. Rail-payroll treasure folklore mirrors Mason, Uvalde, and Ozona traditions along the same westbound corridor. Sonora's native-stone commercial district preserves early-twentieth-century architecture from the railroad boom. Coordinates mark the historic Santa Fe corridor through downtown Sonora.
