Soapy Smith Skagway Outlaw Loot

Lost Treasure AK • Skagway Borough County
Description
Klondike-era Skagway legend of Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith's confidence-game proceeds — cash and gold dust from rigged games and telegraph schemes — hurriedly hidden before his 1898 shootout on Juneau Wharf.
Historical Notes
Soapy Smith controlled Skagway's criminal underworld during the Klondike stampede, running shell games, fake telegraph offices, and allied saloons until Frank Reid killed him on July 8, 1898. Treasure lore holds that Smith and associates buried skimmed gold and strongboxes in the hills above town or along the White Pass route rather than carry everything through the growing federal presence. Legends of America and Alaska State Museum Klondike materials document Smith's reign; cache stories are folklore extensions of his documented wealth rather than confirmed deposits.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
