Description
Lamoille County legend of numerous treasures buried near Smugglers Notch — the named mountain pass where contraband runners hid loot between Stowe and Jeffersonville.
Historical Notes
Smugglers Notch carries Route 108 through a dramatic gap between Mount Mansfield and the Sterling Range. Nineteenth-century smugglers used the pass for cattle, liquor, and trade goods between Canada and Vermont. Compiled New England guides credit the notch with multiple buried caches; the pass may also span Chittenden County lines.
