Sherman 1875 Fire Merchant Cache — Grayson County

Lost Treasure TX • Grayson County County
Description
Sherman legend of merchant strongboxes lost in the 1875 conflagration — when fires destroyed all buildings south and nearly all east of the courthouse square.
Historical Notes
Two fires in 1875 destroyed all buildings south of Sherman's city square and all but two buildings east of the square. The city was rebuilt with better materials, giving Sherman a more stable appearance by the late 1870s. By then Sherman served as a produce market for farmers across Grayson County and areas west, with five flour mills, an iron works, and three newspapers. Frontier fire folklore often claims merchants buried portable specie before fleeing burning districts. Coordinates mark the historic courthouse square at the center of Grayson County. The 1930 courthouse was rebuilt with Public Works Administration funds after the Sherman riot fire.
