Shawnee Silver Dump Oldtown Clark 1780

Lost Treasure OH • Greene County County
Description
Greene County legend that George Rogers Clark's 1780 expedition forced Shawnee defenders to dump roughly one ton of silver into the Little Miami River near Oldtown before abandoning the village.
Historical Notes
Oldtown on the Little Miami was a major Shawnee settlement when Clark's Illinois Regiment raided the Miami Valley in 1780. Compiled lore says defenders cast a ton of silver into the river rather than let it fall to the Americans. The tale anchors Greene County treasure tradition to the same campaign that broke British-Indian resistance in the Northwest Territory.
