Historical Notes
The Rocker Box Andrews County page states two wagon loads of gold are said to have sunk in the mire of Shafter Lake. Shafter Lake is a shallow alkaline lake on the High Plains in northeastern Andrews County. Wagon trains crossing boggy playas and wet alkali flats appear throughout West Texas treasure tradition. Andrews County was organized in 1910 with Andrews as county seat after ranching and dryland farming expanded on the estacado. Coordinates approximate Shafter Lake in Andrews County northwest of Midland.
