Civil War legend of a Confederate barge loaded with Montgomery's wealth scuttled on the Alabama River to keep gold and valuables from Union capture — cargo never salvaged.
Historical Notes
As Union forces threatened Montgomery in 1865, folklore holds that officials loaded a barge with gold, silver, and bank assets and sank it in the Alabama River rather than surrender the treasury.
