Scuttled Montgomery Wealth Barge — Alabama River

Lost Treasure AL • Montgomery County County
Description
Civil War legend of a Confederate barge loaded with Montgomery's wealth scuttled on the Alabama River to keep gold and valuables from Union capture — cargo never salvaged.
Historical Notes
As Union forces threatened Montgomery in 1865, folklore holds that officials loaded a barge with gold, silver, and bank assets and sank it in the Alabama River rather than surrender the treasury. TreasureNet and Digital Alabama describe decades of rumor about the scuttled barge downstream from the capital. River silt, channel changes, and lack of primary documents keep the story in legend status. The Alabama River at Montgomery remains a symbolic endpoint for capital-city lost-wealth tales alongside inland Confederate payroll caches.
