Scudder Treasure Tunnel — Diana's Chapel

Lost Treasure GA • Cherokee County County
Description
Cherokee County legend tying Jacob Scudder's Diana's Chapel hilltop cemetery to the lost treasure tunnel — his epitaph describes a sentinel overlooking the river toward Lewis Blackburn.
Historical Notes
Jacob Scudder served as caretaker of the legendary Cherokee gold tunnel before removal. He and his wife Diana are buried at Diana's Chapel in Cherokee County, where Scudder's granite marker references guarding the tunnel from a hilltop above the Etowah River valley. History Cherokee notes that 1970s grave desecration by treasure hunters seeking Scudder's personal gold damaged the cemetery but revealed no bullion. The tunnel itself, if it existed, may lie on a distant hillside visible from the burial ground. The site connects documented Dahlonega gold-rush history with Cherokee removal-era hoard legends.
