Historical Notes
Upper basin of Sandy Creek, Llano County — between Riley Mountain and Cedar Mountain, in the stretch between Potato Hill and Click Gap. Field report: In sand and gravel deposits along the bottom of the gorge at the base of loose wash deposits, this reach probably contains good placer gold. Fine gold from Llano Uplift Precambrian country concentrates where storm runoff drops heavy minerals against bedrock and in packed gravel lenses below talus fans. This pin marks the upland gorge reach distinct from the lower Sandy Creek entry below Enchanted Rock (where UT geologists panned gold in the 1970s). Potato Hill (approx. 30°33' N, 98°39' W) and Cedar Mountain frame the basin; Click Gap is the local saddle passage in this drainage. Private ranch and upland property — secure permission before prospecting. Respect Enchanted Rock State Natural Area boundaries on nearby public land. Pack out all tools and fill any test holes.
