Sandy Creek Mouth — The Narrows — Llano County

Gold Mining Site TX • Llano County County
Description
Lower Sandy Creek near its mouth on Lake LBJ — bed gravels in the narrows canyon upstream of Sunrise Beach Village. Reported to contain possible placer gold in packed gravel against bedrock.
Historical Notes
Near the mouth of Sandy Creek, in bed gravels of the narrows — possible placer gold. Sandy Creek (Gillespie/Llano counties) rises north of Fredericksburg and flows northeasterly about forty-seven miles to its mouth on Lake Lyndon B. Johnson at Sunrise Beach Village (Handbook of Texas: approx. 30°34' N, 98°25' W). This pin marks the narrows reach just upstream of the lake mouth, where the creek channel constricts through bedrock and bed gravels may concentrate fine gold from the Llano Uplift country upstream. Field report: Bed gravels in the narrows near the creek mouth possibly contain placer gold. Work inside bends, cracks in exposed bedrock, and storm-reworked gravel lenses when water is low and landowner permission is secured. Distinct from related entries: "Sandy Creek Upper Basin — Llano County" (Potato Hill to Click Gap gorge) and "Sandy Creek Below Enchanted Rock — Llano County" (1970s UT panning reach). Nearly all Sandy Creek frontage is private ranch land with restricted access — obtain permission before prospecting. Do not trespass.
