Historical Notes
Enchanted Rock rises 385 feet above Sandy Creek near State Highway 965 on the Llano–Gillespie county line. Tom Ashworth's Prospectors Cache notes University of Texas geologists panned gold from Sandy Creek below Enchanted Rock in the 1970s, citing C. F. Eckhardt's Lost San Saba mine research. APMEX lists Fredericksburg among top Texas gold-prospecting areas; Sandy Creek drains the Enchanted Rock monadnock through southern Llano County. Gold is fine placer, never commercially profitable in quantity. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area prohibits prospecting, digging, and metal detecting. This entry documents the historical creek reach outside park boundaries on mostly private ranch land — obtain permission and respect state park rules on adjacent public land.
