Sand Dunes Treasure — Ward County

Lost Treasure TX • Ward County County
Description
Monahans Sandhills legend of 477 twenty-pound gold bars plus valuables from a massacred wagon train buried in the dune field — shifting sand has frustrated decades of searches.
Historical Notes
The Monahans Sandhills State Park preserves a dune field on the southern Llano Estacado where pioneer trails crossed between the Pecos and Concho drainages. Regional guides list both wagon-train massacre valuables and 477 twenty-pound gold bars in the same sandhills. Jameson's "sand dunes treasure" chapter draws on West Texas anthology traditions also cited by Texas Tales of Lost Mines and Buried Treasures. Wind-driven dunes erase landmarks within a single season. Related entry: Shafter Lake wagon gold lies northeast along the same 1875 corridor. Coordinates approximate Monahans Sandhills State Park in Ward County.
