San Marcos River Headwaters Spanish Silver Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Hays County County
Description
San Marcos Springs legend of Spanish-era silver and mission trade goods lost along the headwaters of the San Marcos River — one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in North America.
Historical Notes
San Marcos Springs (Aquarena) issue from the Balcones Escarpment and have attracted human settlement for at least 12,000 years. Spanish and Mexican travelers used the springs as a landmark between San Antonio and Austin. Hill Country folklore stacks Spanish pack-train silver tales on ancient trail corridors. Archaeological work at Spring Lake has recovered extensive artifacts, but bullion hoards remain in legend status only. Coordinates mark San Marcos Springs / Spring Lake area. Protected archaeological and university property — no unauthorized digging.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
