San Marcos Railroad Payroll Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Hays County County
Description
San Marcos legend of unrecovered railroad payroll strongboxes along the International–Great Northern and Missouri–Kansas–Texas depots — the county seat on the Balcones Escarpment.
Historical Notes
San Marcos was founded on the San Marcos River in 1846 and grew as a mill, university, and rail town. The International–Great Northern and MKT lines met the Austin–San Antonio corridor where I-35 runs today. Central Texas rail-town treasure lore describes bandits burying payroll safes near division points. Downtown San Marcos preserves Victorian commercial buildings along the old depot district near Texas State University. No authenticated cache documented. Coordinates mark downtown San Marcos at the river crossing.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
