San Jon Caprock Canyon Spanish Treasure Cache — Quay County

Lost Treasure NM • Quay County County
Description
San Jon legend of a Spanish-era treasure cache marked by carved rock symbols in a Caprock canyon west of town — with family lore tying the site to outlaw Black Jack Ketchum's lost hoard.
Historical Notes
A TreasureNet thread documents Spanish symbol carvings, a crude rock-map, and a Spanish coin found in a canyon west of San Jon along the Caprock south of Interstate 40. Searchers believed the map pointed to tools buried near a larger cache higher on the canyon wall. A 2024 reply states a great-grandfather lived in a San Jon dugout in 1907–1908 and spent the entire period searching for a lost treasure he supposedly knew about — family tradition attributing the hoard to Black Jack Ketchum. Related Arizona entries document separate Ketchum caches in the Chiricahua Mountains. Coordinates mark San Jon in Quay County between Tucumcari and the Texas border. Canyon location on private ranch land.
