San Gabriel River Spanish Silver Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Williamson County County
Description
Spanish mission-era folklore along the San Gabriel River east of Austin — lost silver from failed San Xavier missions (1740s) and treasure marks on the old buffalo trail that became the Austin–Dallas road.
Historical Notes
Spain operated short-lived missions on the San Gabriel River in the 1740s–1750s (San Francisco Xavier de Horcasitas and related sites). The missions failed amid Apache raids; legends of abandoned silver and mine workings persisted among later Anglo settlers. Mike Cox notes that the Walnut Creek / Lamar Boulevard corridor was part of an ancient trail from Colorado River low-water crossings northward — used by Spanish parties from San Antonio, Republic of Texas "National Highway" traffic, and later the Chisholm Trail. Spanish mule-train treasure tales along this corridor may echo San Gabriel-era folklore. Coordinates approximate the San Gabriel River crossing area in Williamson County east of Round Rock. Archaeological sites are protected; no unauthorized digging.
