San Fernando Academy — Pontotoc

Historic School TX • Mason County County
Description
Private academy founded 1882 in Pontotoc; enrollment reached 200 students before closure in 1890. Building sold to Pontotoc public schools and used until 1927.
Historical Notes
San Fernando Academy made Pontotoc a promising Hill Country town with four stores by 1886 and more than twenty businesses by 1890. Typhoid in 1887 and loss of the railroad doomed both the academy and the town's growth. Pontotoc ISD bought the academy building in 1889; it continued as a public school until 1927 — one of Mason County's longest-serving education structures.
