Historical Notes
Samuel Mason (1739–1803) led the Mason Gang of river pirates on the Mississippi and Ohio before relocating to the Natchez Trace. He was one of America's earliest organized outlaw leaders. Scenic Trace and Legends of America document robberies at stands and ferries where Trace travelers carried specie east to Nashville markets. Folklore imagines Mason caching bullion in limestone hollows west of Davidson County. Mason was eventually killed in Mississippi after a bounty on his head. Trace-era caches in Tennessee remain speculative but appear in multi-state Mason treasure traditions.
