Sam Rayburn Reservoir Submerged Mill Cache — Angelina County

Lost Treasure TX • Angelina County County
Description
Angelina County legend of a sawmill or farm strongbox now submerged beneath Sam Rayburn Reservoir on the Angelina River northeast of Lufkin.
Historical Notes
Sam Rayburn Reservoir was impounded in 1965 on the Angelina River, flooding farms, camps, and river-bottom structures northeast of Lufkin. Reservoir projects across Texas revived old tales of caches lost under new shorelines. The Angelina River valley supported shingle camps and homesteads before the dam. Folklore imagines pre-impoundment strongboxes still sitting below the reservoir bed near former river fords. Coordinates approximate mid–Sam Rayburn Reservoir on the Angelina River in Angelina County.
