Sam Bass Treasure — Packsaddle Mountain

Lost Treasure TX • Llano County County
Description
Legend that Sam Bass hid U.S.-marked canvas sacks of gold in a cave on Packsaddle Mountain near Llano. Also associated with the "Blanco Mine" silver legend rediscovered by settler Larimore in the 1800s.
Historical Notes
Packsaddle Mountain in western Llano County is a landmark ridge visible for miles. One tale says Bass hid canvas sacks stamped "U.S." filled with gold in a cave; a rancher later found only a torn sack fragment. J. Frank Dobie's Coronado's Children describes the Blanco Mine on Packsaddle: a Spaniard's old diggings rediscovered by Llano settler Larimore. In 1860 Larimore and Jim Rowland hauled out hundreds of pounds of bullet-grade metal before Larimore diverted a gully to bury the entrance. Rowland carved his initials on a marker stone. Private ranch land — historical legend only.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
