Sam Bass Treasure — McNeil

Lost Treasure TX • Travis County County
Description
Legend that outlaw Sam Bass buried about $30,000 in gold near the vanished railroad community of McNeil in northern Travis County — one of several unrecovered Bass caches between Round Rock and Austin.
Historical Notes
McNeil was a stop on the International & Great Northern Railroad where the old Dallas–Austin road crossed Brushy Creek north of Austin. Little remains of the original townsite near present-day McNeil Drive and I-35. Legends of America and Hill Country treasure guides say Bass hid canvas sacks of loot from his 1877–1878 train and stage robberies at McNeil before his fatal July 1878 shootout in Round Rock. Related tales also place Bass caches on Packsaddle Mountain (Llano County), near Castell, and along Sam Bass Road west of Round Rock. No authenticated recovery. Coordinates approximate the historic McNeil crossing area.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
