Sam Bass Buried Loot — Round Rock

Lost Treasure TX • Williamson County County
Description
Outlaw Sam Bass reportedly hid loot from train, stagecoach, and bank robberies in the Round Rock area before his fatal 1878 shootout with Texas Rangers. Maps once pointed to a hollow tree on Sam Bass Road.
Historical Notes
Sam Bass and his gang operated across North Central Texas in the 1870s. Bass was mortally wounded in a gunfight in Round Rock on July 19, 1878, while planning a bank robbery. Legend holds that Bass buried much of his loot before the shootout. Years after his death, treasure maps appeared describing gold in a hollow tree on Sam Bass Road about two miles west of Round Rock. Searchers chopped down a matching tree and found nothing — perhaps the wrong tree, or perhaps folklore. Related Sam Bass treasure tales also place caches on Packsaddle Mountain (Llano County), near Castell ($60,000 in coins), and at McNeil in Travis County ($30,000). None have been authenticated.
