Salado Chisholm Trail Strongbox Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Bell County County
Description
Salado — historic stage stop and Chisholm Trail feeder town — legend of unrecovered cattle-drive strongboxes buried near Stagecoach Inn and Salado Creek crossings.
Historical Notes
Salado developed around a limestone creek crossing on the road from Austin to Waco. The Stagecoach Inn (built 1852) served travelers, cattlemen, and soldiers; Salado College followed in 1859. Trail-era folklore describes drovers burying emergency cash along creeks when floods, raids, or gambling losses threatened their stake. Salado's position between Austin, Temple, and Waco made it a natural waypoint in Bell County treasure compilations. Salado's historic district is preserved; no digging on protected sites. Coordinates approximate the Stagecoach Inn / Salado Creek crossing.
