Sabine Pass Confederate Blockade Runner Cache — Jefferson County

Lost Treasure TX • Jefferson County County
Description
Sabine Pass legend of Confederate blockade-runner specie or trade goods buried near the Civil War fort that guarded the Texas–Louisiana coastal inlet south of Beaumont.
Historical Notes
Sabine Pass was a strategic gateway between the Gulf of Mexico and Sabine Lake. Confederate forces under Lt. Richard W. Dowling won a famous victory there on September 8, 1863, repelling a Union invasion fleet. Blockade-running folklore often places buried specie and contraband along inlets where cotton went out and munitions came in. Sabine Pass Battleground State Historic Site preserves the earthworks at the mouth of the pass. Coordinates mark Sabine Pass in southern Jefferson County at the Gulf inlet.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
