Sabinal sits on the Sabinal River where the Edwards Plateau breaks toward the Rio Grande plain; nineteenth-century settlers reported mineral stains in the limestone hills. Lead prospects often figure in Texas lost-mine folklore as markers for Spanish silver traditions. Sabinal developed as a ranch and tourism community on US 90 northwest of Uvalde.
