Runaway Scrape Brazos Crossing Cache — Richmond

Lost Treasure TX • Fort Bend County County
Description
Fort Bend County Runaway Scrape legend of settlers burying silver, jewelry, and strongboxes along the Brazos River crossings at Richmond while fleeing Santa Anna's army in March 1836.
Historical Notes
The Runaway Scrape sent thousands of Texans east toward Louisiana and Galveston Island as Santa Anna advanced. Richmond and the Brazos crossings in Fort Bend County were choke points where families abandoned wagons and hid valuables before the Mexican army arrived. Mary Ann Glasscock of Mina buried household goods including a pitcher before fleeing — artifacts later recovered prove settlers did hide property. Treasure tradition extends the practice to coin hoards and silver along the Brazos bottoms in Fort Bend. Sam Houston's retreat left settlements between the Colorado and Brazos unprotected. Coordinates mark Richmond on the Brazos west of Houston.
