Roy Gardner's Buried Loot — Flagstaff

Description
Train robber Roy Gardner ("King of the Escape Artists") allegedly buried $16,000 in gold coins in an extinct volcanic cone near Flagstaff before his 1921 capture. An estimated $250,000 of his total loot was never recovered.
Historical Notes
Roy Gardner robbed mail trains across Arizona and California in 1920–21. After a failed holdup in Phoenix in November 1921, he was captured and eventually sent to Alcatraz. Legend holds he hid $16,000 in gold coins in a volcanic cone near Flagstaff before arrest. He led officers on a wild goose chase when promising to reveal other caches. Gardner died by suicide in San Francisco in 1940. Coordinates approximate Flagstaff volcanic field area. Specific cone unidentified.
