Roy Gardner Mail Train Loot — San Diego

Lost Treasure CA • San Diego County County
Description
1920s "Smiling Bandit" legend of Roy Gardner's buried mail-train loot from Southern California holdups — cash and securities hidden before his spectacular escapes from McNeil Island and federal custody.
Historical Notes
Roy Gardner robbed U.S. mail trains in the Pacific states in 1920–1921, becoming one of the era's most celebrated escape artists. California treasure lore places portions of Gardner's haul buried near San Diego and Los Angeles corridor hideouts before long federal sentences. Legends of America lists Gardner alongside Milton Sharp and Rattlesnake Dick in the state's bandit-hoard tradition; no authenticated recovery is documented.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
