Description
1920s "Smiling Bandit" legend of Roy Gardner burying mail-train robbery loot in the Puget Sound corridor — Washington entry in the multi-state Gardner cache folklore also told in California and San Diego.
Historical Notes
Roy Gardner robbed U.S. mail trains across the Pacific states and became famous for spectacular prison escapes. Legends of America lists Gardner's buried loot among Washington treasure tales as well as California entries, placing caches along his Pacific Northwest holdup routes. No authenticated recovery is documented; the story extends Gardner's legend into the Evergreen State rail corridor.
